What Is Included in an NSAI Agrément Certified External Wrap

External Wall Insulation (ETICS) does more than lower your heating bills — it turns the heavy masonry blocks of your house into an internal thermal store while giving the exterior a brand-new, crack-resistant, weatherproof facade:

  • Window Sill, Downpipe & Eaves Extensions: Because the outer wall face steps out by ~115mm, every window gets a new powder-coated aluminium or uPVC sill extension, window reveals are insulated with 20mm–30mm high-density XPS board to stop thermal bridging, and rainwater downpipes and gas/ESB meter brackets are extended cleanly.
  • Graphite EPS vs Mineral Wool (Rockwool): Standard single- and two-storey detached/semi-D houses use 100mm silver-grey graphite EPS (0.031 W/mK). Solid stone cottages with lime mortar or walls close to a boundary use vapour-permeable dual-density mineral wool boards paired with silicate/silicone render.

Frequently Asked Questions: External Wall Insulation (The Wrap)

Do I need planning permission for External Wall Insulation in the Midlands?

In almost all cases, no — External Wall Insulation is exempt development in Ireland provided the render finish is broadly consistent with the streetscape and the house is not a Protected Structure.

How long does the silicone topcoat render stay clean?

Hydrophobic silicone-resin thin-coat render repels rainwater and algae spores, staying bright for 15–20+ years without needing annual repainting.

Can I claim both the €8,000 External Wall Grant and the €1,500 Attic Grant?

Yes! A detached homeowner can combine the €8,000 External Wall Insulation grant, €1,500 Attic Insulation grant, and €50 BER grant for €9,550 in direct SEAI support.
